showcasing the showcasers

I remember when sites like CSS Zen Garden first appeared, offering beautiful CSS designs and inspiration to designers. I haven’t looked at a lot of CSS gallery sites recently, but a couple design projects on the horizon spurred me to add some new CSS/Design feeds in my newsreader last night and I found Cascading Style Shit | Showcasing the Showcasers to be a fantastic resource. It’s a showcase of showcasers — a portal to dozens of great CSS design galleries.

Unfortunately, not all the linked sites have given as much thought to their RSS feeds as they have to their design and content. A gallery-themed site needs an RSS feed that includes images, and sadly, some of these sites have old school text-only (and sometimes headline-only) news feeds.

like a fat frog jumping lilypads

Liberace once said “when the reviews are bad, I tell myself that they can join me as I cry all the way to the bank.” He should have added that bad reviews can also be hilarious. Check out some of the choice quotes at Metacritic’s roundup on Georgia Rule, the recent movie with Jane Fonda, Felicity Huffman, and Lindsay Lohan.

  • A warm family comedy about child molestation. (Washington Post)
  • Do not take your mom unless she’s Roseanne Barr. (New York Post)
  • Certain words should be reserved for special occasions. “Abysmal” is one of them, and this is as special as such occasions get. (Wall Street Journal)
  • The actors often seem to be acting in different movies. (Toronto Globe & Mail)
  • It’s as if [the film] were made by Martian anthropologists who assume that human audiences are as twisted as the people on-screen. (San Francisco Chronicle)
  • It doesn’t make you feel good; it makes you queasy. (USA Today)
  • Jane Fonda made a comeback to do dreck like this and “Monster-in-Law?” (Premiere Magazine)
  • It suggests an Ingmar Bergman script as directed by Jerry Lewis. The subject matter is grim, the relationships are gnarled, the worldview is bleak, and, at any given moment, you suspect someone’s going to be hit with a pie. (Variety)
  • It’s a dramedy whose blend of melodrama and humor is awkward and incongruous, leaping between the two modes like a fat frog jumping lilypads. (Austin Chronicle)

a note to the myspacecadets

Dear myspace.com users: if you want photos of Brian Urlacher, Vin Diesel, or any of the other hot boys discussed throughout my website, you best save your own copy of the photo and upload it to your own server/space. If you hot link to my image, chances are you might end up like the dozen or so people today who currently have a photo of a bare, ugly ass tiled as the background image on their myspace.com profile.

u r lazy and a fucking idiot

Below are two completely unedited email messages from an outside vendor I’m dealing with for work at the moment:

Will u pls send me which flash banners ur talking about because I was checking the site if u mean the banner in the main page it’s a java applet any way if u need something different inform me pls.

Pls find attached the fla zip files for all the flash files u ask for and i’ll try to send u later the images associated any way pls inform me if that’s what u want or if u want anything else. Regards.

What the fuck? I am so sick of outside vendors and freelancers.* They cause me nothing but headaches and problems, and this one borders on both stupid and illiterate.

*Note: I reserve the right to flip-flop and *love* freelancers if I ever become a freelancer myself — a thought which crosses my mind with increasing frequency during my 3+ hours of commuting each day.

In other news, TGIF. It’s been a particularly hellish week, and it was only 4 days long.
