I love this quote from actor Jack Palance, who died today at the age of 87. Apparently he didn’t think much of most of the directors he worked with, and he certainly didn’t take his craft too seriously: “Most of the stuff I do is garbage” he once told a reporter. I’m still not sure if his name was pronounced PAL-lance or Pa-LANCE, but either one is probably much easier to pronounce than his real name: Volodymyr Palanyuk. Palance was born in northeastern Pennsylvania and enjoyed an early career playing tough cowboys and villians. He enjoyed a career resurgence later in life, playing boss Carl Grissom (my favorite Palance role) in Tim Burton’s brilliant 1989 edition of Batman, and winning an Oscar in 1992 for City Slickers. Palance famously jumped up onto the stage to accept his Oscar and dropped to the stage and did one-armed pushups (this at the age of 73).
