Maybe the third time’s the charm for the dollar coin. It’s a fascinating article, especially the explanation of how the state quarters series, scooped up by collectors, has generated over $5 billion in revenue for the U.S. Treasury through seigniorage (a word that CNN.com has misspelled). The only problem I see with this plan is somewhere around the year 2018, George W. Bush will be on a U.S. coin. They should make note to avoid putting a horse’s head on the reverse side of Bush’s coin to alleviate any confusion over which side is the head and which side is the tail.
I love dollar coins. Since we have been traveling to Canada for 37 odd years, I have enjoyed using the dollar (and now 2 dollar) coins. The last longer, are easy to work with and since it doesn’t look like they are going to revamp the US dollar bill like they have the higher denominations, the coins are much more artistic than the bills. My Aunt Carol gave us a bunch of loose Canadian coins and a few bills. One happened to be a Canadian Dollar bill (I don’t think they have printed those in close to 20 years.) I used it at a stop on our way to Sportsmen’s Camp last year, and the young lady at the counter had never seen one before.
I don’t know what our problem is with them in the US. I was too young when the Susan B. Anthony coins came out. With the last coin, I would get two rolls when I cashed my check and I used them wherever and whenever I could. I guess I didn’t do enough. So, if you like dollar coins, when the next group comes out, use them! Everywhere! Maybe we can make this one work.
According to the Mayan Calendar (or what that Sumarrian), everything ends in 2012, so you won’t have to worry about having to carry a W Dollar. If they are wrong, then you will have some time to prepare by spending those Reagans. Besides, if I have to carry around Chester Aurthur and James Polk (F*#@? geezers) then you can handle Dubbya. If you want to get us replublicans back, make us have to spend the Hillary Dollar, then we fight back with Rice, or the Terminator, and then it goes on and on. There are days I pray the Mayans or Sumarrians or whoever are right.
