I try to hide it. Keep it in the deep recesses. But every once in a while the fact that I was raised in a rather isolated section of Hicksville USA reaches out of the depths and slaps me in the face. For instance, this snippet from tonight’s online chat with mom:
Mom: What are you doing this weekend?
Ron: we are going to a concert on Saturday night … Bob Dylan, you’ve probably heard of him
Ron:
Mom: I have tomorrow off, I wanted to go to a dinner-theater, but your dad don’t like that sort of stuff.
Mom: I told him to make the plans then.
Mom: No I don’t know him
Ron: why doesn’t he like it?
Ron: I’ll bet he’s never been to dinner theatre … it can be fun.
Ron: WAIT, you don’t know who BOB DYLAN is????????
Mom: No
Ron: he’s in the rock and roll Hall of Fame, one of the greatest songwriters ever
Ron: been recording since the early 60s
Mom: I guess I only remember the singers not the writers.
Ron: he sings all his songs as well
Mom: Oh. No.
Ron: you didn’t listen to enough rock and roll when you were young
My mom doesn’t know who Bob Dylan is. It’s tragic, really.
Perhaps she knew him as Bob Zimmerman before he changed his name?
My parents don’t know who Bob Dylan is either. And they’ve never been big fans of Elvis or the Beatles… I don’t think they could even name the four original Beatles. Mike and Emily – sad, sad, sad…
“So don’t fear if you hear
A foreign sound to your ear;
It’s alright, Ma, I’m only sighing.”
Dylan is one of my mother’s favorite artists. Hope you enjoy the show.
first — i’m jealous. it’s been a couple years since i’ve seen dylan (she bows down with “we’re not worthy” respect towards the bard himself). my mother raised me on allman bros., bob dylan, grateful dead, beach boys, CSNY. i couldn’t imagine my life if she hadn’t sent me down the path to rocknroll righteousness. your mom knows bob dylan. she just doesn’t know she knows. dylan not only has impressed two or 3 generations with his work, he’s an icon:
“I wanna be bob dylan.
mr. jones wishes he was someone just a little more funky.
when everybody loves you, son, that’s just about as funky as you can be.”
have fun seeing mr. bob.
by the way — where WERE you raised? are you from PA?
Bob Dylan – Isn’t he that character on BH 90210? He certainly doesn’t play the only two types of music – country or western. – Smile – pearly white, with just a hint of pirated toothpaste whiteness in the corner of his mouth!
we must be seperated at birth as my mom’s the same. what did these people do during the sixties? my mom was a happening chick in a dorky “American Dream” kind of way while i’d wished she’d been one in a Woodstock kind of way. i’ve certainly tried to take up her slack
You think it’s bad being from “Hicksville USA”? How about being actually born in Hicksville, Ohio, USA? Yeah, it’s a real place. I’m always embarrassed when I have to write it on a form. At least I know who Bob Dylan is though.
Like Kris states, I too am from a town called Hicksville… Long Island NY – home of Billy Joel… so I know it’s on the map… great town with a funny name… that’s all.
Wow…no love for Bob, eh? Hope you liked the show…how was PG, by the way?
This could be your fault? Children have a certain responsiblity to educate their parents…bring them up right.
